Half an apple a day keeps the mutants away (or not)

genetic mutant apple

Finally Mother Nature is catching up with mankind. We have given the world peanut butter and jelly in a single jar, Neapolitan ice cream and the magic of Nerds. It’s about time the natural world followed suit with a little flavor mixing.

Apparently the Golden Delicious was picked from the tree by one Ken Morrish of England. The red side is supposedly sweeter, having spent more time in the sun, which is perfect for those of us who appreciate a little sweetness with a tangy apple. Even though the experts say it was a genetic freak with odds of a million to one, I say Mother Nature is finally getting around to the good stuff.

Easy slices, easy wedges

Progressive Tower Slicer and Wedger

Knife work can be tedious and dull, especially if your skills are a bit rusty. Even if you are sharp with a knife, chances are you could stand to hone your skills a bit more. Creating perfectly even slices and wedges takes machine precision that most home cooks simply don’t have. However, the Progressive Tower Slicer and Wedger does.

With a simple push, perfectly even slices or wedges can be made with this kitchen gadget. Just insert the particular blade you want, add your fruit or vegetable and plunge away. Complete with coordinating pushers and a cleaning comb, the 6-cup capacity slicer and wedger is perfect for handling the prep work for presentable salads and hors’ d oeuvres. All parts are dishwasher safe.

Breakfast (Machine) is finally ready

Platform21 Breakfast Machine

It took a couple of weeks, but breakfast is finally ready. Platform21 set out on a project to create the Breakfast Machine: A Rube Goldberg-type contraption designed to make breakfast as complicated as possible. As long as you like toast with jam, scrambled eggs, juice and coffee you’re all set.

Platform21 Breakfast Machine wide view

Yuri Suzuki and artist Masa Kimura created the masterpiece (with a lot of hungry friends). Now if we can just get that all in a box and off to marketing… Video after the jump breakfast.

Slotless Toaster proves there is a tool for every job

The Slotless Toaster by Bodum at Hammacher Schlemmer

Bagels need to be toasted. This is a fact. Many toasters do not accommodate bagels and other larger bread items. This too, is a fact. Therefore, there is a need for a tool to accomplish the toasting of bagels and the like. Luckily, Hammacher Schlemmer and Bodum have made available The Slotless Toaster.

The heated flatbed surface provides 700-watts of pure toasting power. Just like a regular toaster, preferred level of doneness can be set via an easy to use knob, and an included crumb tray catches…crumbs.

Bagels, croissants, Texas toast and baguettes have finally found a toasty home with this specialized appliance. Now excuse me, as I have to go get my lunch out of my ultra-convenient, multiple-use, toaster oven. Don’t forget to flip your toast.

Four times the pizza party

pizza_pan_set

One of the most enjoyable food dilemmas out there is what to put on your pizza. While there are no incorrect answers (like putting ketchup on a hot dog), chances are that not everyone is going to side with your anchovy, pineapple and garlic preferences. Sure, you can make pizza with one half topped one way, and the other half topped another way, but then you only have half of a pizza the way you really want it. Wouldn’t you rather just have the whole pie the way you want it? Or better yet, four of ’em.

Okay, so this Pizza Pan Set is all about sharing and those four pies aren’t all going to one place (hopefully). No matter what you want on your pizza, with four pies in the oven, everybody is going to get a slice. If you’re lucky there may even be some of that anchovy special left over.

***UPDATE 1/7/2025: Turns out four is too much! (Product no longer available.) Good news! Here is a set of three! The Chef Pomodoro Pizza Baking Set with 3 Pizza Pans & Pizza Rack is ready to stand in to give you triple the pizza.

Chef Pomodoro Pizza Baking Set with 3 Pizza Pans & Pizza Rack, 13-Inch, Non-stick Pizza Stand & Pizza Tray for Oven, Grill, Pizza Pan with Holes, Perforated Pizza Pan for Oven, Barbeque

Pumpkin Lights scream for no one

Pumpkin Lights with Remote Control

Halloween is creeping up. Time to start planning for some spookiness. While these Pumpkin Lights with Remote Control are certainly a neat idea, I can’t help think that they could be better. Sure, having a flameless light inside your jack-o’-lantern is a good thing, especially when it means you don’t have to reach into the increasingly goopy interior to turn it on. (Assuming, of course, it survives Halloween night.) I just can’t help thinking that something is missing.
