Miniature Tagines are an update for the classic dish
Eschewing the heavy glazed clay for a more modern approach, the All-Clad Miniature Tagines use a combination of bonded steel and heavy stoneware to achieve results. The self-basting stoneware cover traps heat and moisture, while the 2-quart capacity base can be used on either electric or gas stovetops.
Packaged as a set of two, the modern tagines are based on the traditional Moroccan design. Not only do they make for an effective cooking vessel, but they are also impressive serving devices. Retrosink: Potato pancakes with an old-timey grater
Lately I’ve had potatoes on the brain. A recent trip to Barney Greengrass led to some delicious latkes (which always has a ripple effect), while in San Francisco I just discovered a recipe book that called for potato pancakes to be made with Swiss and cream cheese. Sacrilege? Maybe. But delicious too. The amazing potato goes well in so many recipes; you can’t really go wrong. So in honor of this potato obsession, today I find it necessary to show off a potato-related kitchen gadget. Since we are talking about the Old Country (take your pick), it seemed appropriate for a Retrosink post. Hence we have the Mouli Parsmint “Creation Moulin-Lecumes†grater.

Past and present collide with this kitchen tool
If only all kitchen tools were this easy to use. You look at it and you know what it is used for: anything it wants. The Homo Sapiens Caveman Kitchen Tool is a throwback to the earliest days of cooking. While I doubt too many cavemen were concerned with grating garlic or ginger (as this sandstone tool is capable of), the simple effectiveness of a heavy object as a useful cooking implement cannot be denied (nor will it).
Useful for tenderizing meat or grinding herbs into a paste, the tool also features a flat edge for sharpening knives. Unlike the cooking tools of the far past, this one has one additional benefit that eluded our caveman ancestors: it is dishwasher safe.

Iconic NYC mug survives the test of time
It wasn’t long ago that New Yorkers could everywhere be found sipping coffee out of iconic blue coffee cups. Those days may be threatened, but the icon will continue. The We Are Happy To Serve You cup lives on in ceramic form. The Grecian inspired design was created in the 60’s and quickly became the go-to to-go coffee cup for NYC delis and coffee vendors. Cheaper alternatives may be pushing the famous cup out of the marketplace, but for $12, you can still grab a little piece of history. Squircle Plate for food of any shape
In a perfect world all food would be served on plates that matched. Triangular plates for slices of pizza, square plates for sandwiches, and circle plates for bagels and burgers. Alas, the real world isn’t built that way and every day millions of mismatched meals are served; this haphazard way of eating simply doesn’t have to continue.
The Squircle Plate takes the convenience of the square plate and adds to it the circle. (Or is it the other way around?)
