Serve up a side salad — literally

Dark Acacia-Wood Salad Bowl with Stand Set

Salad is an excellent accompaniment to almost any meal. Problem is, big, leafy greens take up a lot of room. After all, salad bowls are big for a reason; they require a large footprint to hold all that greenery. As such, often the salad bowl gets left behind, while the other, less healthy courses get the limelight of the tabletop.

The Dark Acacia-Wood Salad Bowl with Stand Set allows for the salad to stand alone, saving valuable tabletop real estate for other entrées. The 28.5-inch stand compliments the 8-inch by 16-inch bowl, and placed next to the table, the set is an attractive and easy-to-reach option for smaller dining tables. With this salad bowl at your tableside, the roast beef and mashed potatoes are just going to have to learn how to share top billing.

Produce Savers look the part

Produce Savers: Apple Saver by Evriholder Products

Produce doesn’t always come in convenient sizes. Sometimes, we just need a bite. Whether you just need a few slices of tomato for a sandwich or want half of an apple as a snack, the unused portion needs to be stored for later use.

Produce Savers by Evriholder Products are a set of specifically (very specific) designed gadgets for saving and storing common produce. Available in five distinct styles, the produce savers work by protecting the produce from surrounding air. Place your fruit or vegetable cut side down, and clip to hold in place. The lack of contact to air helps to prevent browning and keep the produce clean.

The produce savers are certainly fanciful creations, and at $3.99 each (looks like they were pretty popular at that price!), they are definitely affordable. And fun too. The Cucumber Saver looks like a cucumber, and the Lemon Saver perfectly imitates the shape of a lemon. Click on through for pictures of the whole set, including the Onion Saver as well as a Tomato Saver. And of course, don’t forget the Apple Saver.

Twist & Chop simplifies food prep

Kuhn Rikon Twist & Chop

Sometimes lugging out the food processor for a quick and easy meal just doesn’t seem worth it. There is no doubt that the food processor is the workhorse of the kitchen, but sometimes it just isn’t practical. For those times when you need to chop just a few veggies there is another solution.

The Kuhn Rikon Twist & Chop simplifies food preparation. Perfect for creating a small salad, the slicer operates simply by twisting the lid. Just place your food in the container and twist away. The blades are double-sharpened so they cut in both directions. Best of all, when finished, you can just pop it in the dishwasher.

The Kuhn Rikon Pull Chop Chopper/Manual Food Processor with Cord Mechanism takes the concept and turns it on its head… or at least pulls it!

Chop salad right in the bowl — and more

Salad Chopper Bowl

Like many others, I find myself using appliances and tools for tasks that they are not designed for. Be it a screwdriver as a hammer or a fork as a knife, there are hidden uses lurking in all of our hand tools. Sometimes, they are not so hidden.

This Salad Chopper and Bowl from OXO looks to me like it has a second, more useful application. Sure the bowl is great, but I can’t really see myself chopping vegetables inside of it. Some pieces would end up too big, some too small, and all of them oddly shaped. Instead, I’ll choose to chop my salad the old-fashioned way, and serve with pizza strips that could only be cut from such an original salad pizza chopper.

The secret to any salad is to make sure that the dressing is well incorporated. The best way to do that is get your hands dirty. Your Salad Hands, that is.

Bad puns aside, these Salad Hands certainly seem a ‘handy’ (sorry) way to toss and serve pasta or salad. They come as a set of two, and are available in four different bright and cheerful colors.
