Pictured above is the original waffle iron used by Bill Bowerman when he created Nike’s distinctive athletic shoe tread in 1971. Thought to be lost, it was recently uncovered by the family as they were performing some home improvements. Apparently, ol’ Bill buried the iron (along with early prototype sneakers) because garbage trucks wouldn’t service his house as it sits atop of a steep hill. Times have certainly changed (as too hopefully has trash pickup), as that old rusted-out waffle iron pictured above is responsible for helping to spawn a (multi-multi) billion-dollar idea.
